Tuition Grant Program (TGP)

The Tuition Grant Program (TGP) assists eligible employees to pay for their dependent children's undergraduate college education by submitting payments directly to accredited colleges and universities toward the cost of the child(ren)’s tuition. TGP policies are set forth in the Administrative Guide Memo 27.4.

Eligibility for Staff
Staff must be in a benefits-eligible University position that is six months or more (four months or more for bargaining unit employees) and 50% FTE or greater. Additionally, staff must have completed five years of continuing benefits-eligible service to qualify.

Eligibility for Faculty and Senior Administrative Staff
An appointment of six months or longer with no length of service requirement.

Eligibility for Children
Review the TGP Guidelines for detailed information on children’s eligibility.

TGP payments are toward the cost of tuition (mandatory fees) for your child’s school, or up to one-half of Stanford University’s tuition (e.g., half of the 2007/08 Stanford tuition is $17,400), whichever is less. TGP benefits are prorated for regular staff working less than full-time. A maximum allowable term coverage per year also applies.

Eligible employees must submit an application between April 1 and July 1 to ensure timely payment to the child’s institution. The Educational Assistance Programs Office reviews the application; if approved, an authorization letter is sent to the qualifying employee. The employee is responsible to forward the letter to the child’s institution, as it contains billing instructions. An application must be submitted each year the child is attending an eligible institution, whether for the entire academic year or one semester or quarter (including summer). SLAC employees must submit applications to the SLAC Benefits Office.

The Tuition Grant Program is governed by federal tax regulations as well as University policies. Please thoroughly review the TGP Guidelines and, if applicable, consult with your tax advisor and/or institution’s financial aid advisor about how TGP payments may affect your taxes or your child’s financial aid. Contact the Human Resources Educational Assistance Program Office with questions; call (650) 736-2985 (local) or (877) 905-2985 (toll-free); press the option for TGP.
